Teaching Philosophy
My priority is to engage my students in meaningful learning, where they learn to think critically and ask questions. In developing curious, socially-conscious engineers, we can ensure a great future for the construction industry, the built environment, and society-at-large. In my classroom, I use accessible teaching strategies, including process-oriented instruction and real-world applications.
Teaching Experience
Contracts, Liabilities, and Ethics
Teaching Assistant Fall 2024
I worked closely with the instructor to re-design this course, implementing different instructional methods to engage student learning. I developed and taught a two-week engineering ethics module, expanding upon traditional ethics content and focusing on an evaluation process for ethical dilemmas. Kicking off with engineering ethics and transitioning into contracts and liabilities, I led weekly discussion labs where I worked with students to dissect and evaluate engineering case studies.
Project Management and Economics
Teaching Assistant Fall 2023 and Spring 2024
As the TA for this course, I engaged with students in office hours and in class. I met with students regularly in both one-on-one and group settings to review course content and provide additional instruction. I taught several lectures in both semesters, where I was able to develop and improve my instructional methods. I developed and graded homework assignments, hands-on activities, and exam questions.
Engineering Ethics in Community Projects
Bucknell University Speaker Series, Spring 2024
I was invited to speak at my Alma Mater for their Junior Civil Engineering Speaker Series. I spoke about my work from several research projects, tying them altogether to convey the importance of considering community impacts of engineering work. I engaged with students through stories about Superstorm Sandy, Swedish snow removal, and rural Alaska drinking water.
Teaching for Disability Accommodations
Workshop Facilitator, Fall 2022
I developed this interactive workshop with a teaching partner, which we facilitated for civil engineering Teaching Assistants. We demonstrated different learning experiences for students with disabilities, and shared various teaching strategies that they can use to engage all learners in their classrooms.
Humanitarian Engineering Seminar
Guest Lecturer, Spring 2023 (2), Spring 2024
In this undergraduate multi-disciplinary seminar, I spoke with students about my work in rural Alaska. We discussed important considerations around community engagement and the impacts of engineering work.
Needs and Impact Assessment in Underserved Communities
Guest Lecturer, Spring 2024
In this graduate multi-disciplinary course, I shared my experiences with community-engaged research in rural Alaska. I discussed examples of how my work changed over time and how I adapted my process to the needs of the community.
Urban Systems Engineering
Guest Lecturer, Fall 2023, Fall 2024
I developed and taught a two-week module on qualitative content analysis for this graduate course. I taught students how to qualitatively code interviews, identify relationships in data, and transform their findings into a cognitive map.
Qualitative Methods in Engineering
Guest Lecturer, Fall 2024
